The adult team of DKKA played against Debrecen in the fifth round of the Hungarian Cup this afternoon at five o'clock. Since the rules of the series favored the guests even in the case of a draw, our team had to get a win to advance.
This was not expected to be an easy task at all, and Debrecen had similar intentions. The guests started the match accordingly, responding to Szalai's early goal with four consecutive goals in the first five minutes (1-4). The continuation did not bring much change to the game, as our team had to fight hard for every goal against the excellently closing Debrecen defense. Meanwhile, almost every attack on the other side ended successfully, prompting the home coaching staff to call a timeout in the 14th minute (4-10).
Unfortunately, the short break did not immediately break Debrecen's momentum, as Loki scored the next two goals. It took until the 18th minute for Nick to break our goalless period (5-12). In the remaining time of the first half, we managed to come back to six once, but DVSC pulled away again. However, when the academy team reduced the gap to five after Wéninger's saves and goals from Bouti and Kopecz, the guests called a timeout (10-15). Our handball players fought excellently at this part of the game, with Wéninger saving a penalty, and on the other side, Horváth and Borgyos were successful. But DVSC also showed its strength, and after Jovovity's goal, they awaited the second half with a 16-12 lead.
The four-goal difference did not seem insurmountable after the break, but Debrecen did not want to let go of their lead. They tried to emphasize this with a 3-0 series in the minds of our handball players after the turnaround (12-19). From here, our team managed to come back once more to within five goals, but DVSC responded with another 3-0 stage, settling the question of advancement by the 39th minute (14-23). Unfortunately, the continuation did not bring any excitement, and although our handball players tried everything to prevent their deficit from growing further, Debrecen, aware of their significant advantage, did not ease up. In the end, they advanced to the Hungarian Cup Final Four with a 36-23 victory.
